Mark Your Calenders for the SMWBC Fall Century ~

Saturday October 9th 2010 !!!

The Smoky Mountain Wheelmen Bicycle Club will host

our 37th Annual Fall Century departing from Loudon

Municipal Park (located off Highway 72 at Roberson

Springs Road) on Saturday October 9th @ 8:00am.

There are three ride options to suit your cycling taste:

25, 62, or 100 miles. The routes traverse Loudon and Monroe

Counties and feature mostly quiet roads with fantastic views of

the Smoky Mountains, Tellico Lake, and Colorful Fall Foliage.

The routes can be catagorized as 'gently rolling hills' with no major

sustained climbs but do offer some elevation gain. All ride distances

will include awesome 'SAG' a.k.a. 'Support And Gear' from our

experienced crew of club Volunteers, well stocked Rest Stops

with a new Water Stop on the Century Route, Clear Cue Sheets ,

and a post ride meal at the finish line pavillion. This year's event will

feature a T-Shirt designed by local artist Cynthia Tipton. Stay tuned.....

Heinous Loop

Best 100k in East Tennessee

Dave recently built up his Cross Check he got for Christmas so he figured what better way to test it out than a Heinous Loop. For those who aren't familiar with this ride, it's an epic gravel road and pavement route though the Smoky Mountains. It's one of my favorite rides. The route we took started at the base of the Foothills Parkway in Walland. We rode to Town send and up Rich Mountain road to Cades Cove. Once in the Cove we rode the loop to the Visitor Center and followed the gravel road to Parson's Branch Rd. Parson's Branch is an eight mile rough gravel service road that takes you to the Dragon a famous motorcyclist destination. When we hit the Dragon it's a right turn on 129, climb up to "Long Span" then along the banks of Chillhowee Lake to the Tallassee side of the Foothills Parkway. It was a nice day for a ride so we were joined by a few hundred motorcycles on the Parkway. The complete ride is around 65 miles with over 6000' of elevation gain. If you do it, start early and take plenty of water and food. You'll be rewarded with some of the best views in the Smokies. Cades Cove will be closed to all traffic until May 22nd, 2010. Look for this ride on the club ride schedule for late Spring.
